A few years ago our company has spend a lot of money on having Vibro tip installed on a fair few o our electric motors but it somehow did not seem to be cost effective or to much of a hassle for our over worked maintenance people.
Is it a white elephant or just to much bother?

I am unfamiliar with vibro tip, but vibration measurements whether by analysis or trips are a maintenance tool not a magic wand. Like anything you need to spend time to make it cost effective. Lots of companies bring in different products but dont follow through or provide the correct support to give these things a fair go which in turn makes the industry look bad. You might need to assign 1 person, so they take ownership and run it from there. Just my thoughts hope it all work out for you.
