For used oils, I seek expert guidance to understand testing procedure and interpretaion guideline for the following tests conducted using FTIR

(1) Oxidation
(2) Nitration
(3) Soot
(4) Sulfation

Can any one help me?

Kumar,
I think that only nitration extent and soot content can always be read with a good reliability from FTIR spectrum of used oil. Oxidation band near 1700 cm-1 can be superimposed with the band of ester base oil and cannot be sufficiently integrated, and sulfation signals are almost negligible as a consequence of good quality of recent low-sulfur fuels. That is my experience with european motor oils and quality of european fuels.

Dear Greg,

I happen to see this discussion going on regarding use of FTIR for used oil analysis.

Please send me details too as I am also interested in participating and enriching my knowledge on the subject.

Incidentally, we have fairly well equipped laboratory for handling used oil analysis as well as other analytical testings, for research projects, pharmaceuticals, etc. complete with AAS, ICP, GC-MS, GCs, HPLCs, FT-IR, UV-VIS, etc. to name a few, at Mumbai in western part of INDIA.

My Email address is : sm@spagroup.net

Regards

I came to know through web search that McGill university, Montreal, QC, Canada has done lot work using FTIR and their findings are being followed by an oil industry in used oil testing I.E. Thermal- lube Quebec ; its web site http://www.thermal-lube.com/

Good morning everybody,
I am new to this forum, in fact i registered because of this thread.

I work in a lubs lab, we did not have any ftir instrument until now, and we have very recently received a perkin-elmer "oil express" analyzer (Spectrum One + autosampler + oilexpress software).

From the first, few, tests we performed it seems that the results (the indexes that are given as results) are not repeatable. I am also not familiar with this "index" format of the results. Perkin Elmer has manuals etc but, the results do not seem to make any sense as I obviously don't know how to interpret them. I really don't know which way I should continue the "research".

So I saw this post

Greg

and I thought that, maybe someone could help here! Is there a way that I could get this guide too?

How can I use this new, state of the art, instrument for used oil analysis? Maybe someone has already experience of using the same software too?

Thanks!!!

Dear Mes,

We also had a PE FTIR Spectrum One + Sampler + Oil Express Software and we conduct and huge comparison with others parameters like TBN, TAN, filtration in millipore system and WM, and the software present problems of low values of Oxidation and with high concentration of WM, insoluble contaminants, low TBN and high TAN, in our experience the software in some cases don't give good information....
I know there is an ASTM draft about FTIR on condition monitoring and probably during this year will be official...
now patience my friend....

regards
pcancino

Dear pcancino,
At first thank you for replying.

I checked in www.astm.org and it seems that they work on a standard for Water Contamination (WK6542), I guess this is the one you mean. It is mentioned that there will not be any reference to limits in the final standard, but one has to do stats analysis etc. This is logical of course, but what does one do when one receives very few samples from a specific engine? This is an often phenomenon in our lab...

I would be most grateful if you could mention any values for the other parameters that above or below them you consider the results of the software being disputable. If there is no problem with that, you would really help me to limit my own recearch in areas that there is a meaning. For the moment, I feel like our lab has wasted a big amount of time and money by gathering info that does not seem to be useful at all.

Thanks again for your time.

Mes, give me your email and I’ll send you a copy of the ASTM Draft.

I can't send you data of results due to we didn't implement the DLL from PE to perform the calculation for the same reason that you got problems now, we implemented the DLL from ExxonMobil because we're a third party laboratory.

Regards
pcancino
