Can someone tell me the standard tests to be carried to out on gearbox oil in order to determine (1) remaining life of the oil (2) condition of the machine (i.e which are the elements which have to be tested)

Ashvin,

According to ASTM D-6224 (Standard Practice for In-Service Monitoring of Lubricating Oil for Auxiliary Power Plant Equipment), the following tests should be ran on gear oils:

-Appearance
-Viscosity @ 40 C
-Acid Number
-Water
-Elemental Analysis

I would suggest that you also perform Direct-Read (DR) Ferrography to monitor wear.

Linear Sweep Voltammetry (often referred to RULER testing) can be used to measure the remaining useful life of an oil.

Ashvin,

Most used oil laboratories already have a specific set of test suites for testing both industrial and automotive gear oils which includes most of the tests mentioned including oxidation via FTIR. They should be able to provide you with the test suites dependent on the oil type.

As said above most all oil labs will have a gear oil "pakage" aswell as engine, hydro, turbine etc.
both herguth and analysts have this

Cary,

Thanks for the reply.
Could you brief me about the RULER Method and what equipment is needed to take readings.

Are there any ASTM standards specified for inservice Industrial Hydraulic oil ?

Thanks,
Ashvin

Bruce,

Thanks,

Gearbox oil anlysis, as in all OCM, is looking at 3 criteria. Oil condition, equipment condition and contamination.
The most common reason for an oil drain is contamination of the oil(water ingres, foreign solid material and liquid contamination, maybe wrong oil) All these can lead to increase in wear(wear metals)
Carry out OCM and see trends in wear metals and
ferrous debris (PQ and/or DR Ferrography)to predict potential failures.

As mentioned do not forget oxidation but one thing to consider is if you use esters or ester co-base oils an oxidation test done by FTIR will be skewed (similar absorption). You'll want a TAN tested to help indication oxidation changes.

Lot's of good advice given.

Hi!!!

We are company dealing in Proactive Maintenance solutions and work with leading companies.

Manufactures field test kits for monitoring the physical parameters of the oil like Viscosity, TBN, TAN, Water in oil, insoluble etc.

Also produces lab as well as field kits to monitor the wear debris.
