What is an SRV test. How do we conduct it and what is its significance.

The SRV test is a most modern apparatus to meassure wear and friction of 2 surfaces rubbing together. The name stands for Oscillating Friction and Wear. This machine was developed at Optimol in Gernmany in the 70's and improved continuously. Today it is normalized by ASTM and DIN as far as I know. It is a nice tool for running comparative SRV friction tests with competing lubricants. THe default test is a 2 hour oscillating of a ball on a disc with 300 N force. The difference between materials or lubricants can be easily appreciated. I heard that now there is a SRV test moduc for simullating gears and another simulating engines. THeir website is www.optimol-instruments.de

I heard about the new SRV test machine:
A new generation of the SRV® test system has been launched. The SRV® 4 offers a host of new features such as • inclination of the tribocontact (0-90°) • measurement of electrical resistance between specimens • friction signal analysis (FSA) • a software allowing complex condition-action rules to be incorporated in your test modes This means that it can simulate almost any condition find in field applications, a great tool! |

Tribology Testing Labs does SRV testing (www.tribologytesting.com) applying either ASTM standard methods and specimens (52100 steel ball on disk) or matching your actual materials and specimens. SRV is a great tool to benchmark friction and wear properties of your current materials, coatings, lubricants... and make continual improvements. |
