Gentelman.
An engine 3508 cat (992G) run very well up to 27,000 hr (The main bearing changed around 20,000 hr). Suddenly, the camshaft failed around 27,000 hr without any indication of Cr or Fe.
Does somebody have any explanation??

Dan,

The scenario you described is very unique.

I have not seen cam shafts break on 3508 engines, especially not without any prior indication / warning in the form of used oil analysis.

Do you have any more information regarding the failure?

Please elaborate, if possible.

Stefan

Dear Stefan
Thanks

I have an interesting photo. May I have your mail??
The camshaft did not break. At one point (Cyl 8) the roller scratch badly the camshaft without any indication. We are using an oil grade API CG-4 .
What is your experience regarding that engine?

Dan,

I think that 27,000 hr is a good performance of this kind of engines but I have some questions before I could
Give you my points of view.
- Your repair action at 20,000 hr was it an overall?
- Have you changed camshaft bearing at 20,000 hr?
- What about cam follower wear?
- Could I see you data base around 15,000 hr?
- Do you have some photos of camshaft, cam followers, and bearings, push rod ..?
You can send me photos to my e-mail address Casablanca@mailmania.co.za

regards
Rachid
