A good lube oil practice that I have implemented at my facility includes the use of a Lube Oil Sample Rack. I take monthly samples on two large boiler feedpumps. The glass sample bottles are stored on a 3 bin display shelf with the third bottle containing a "Virgin" sample- meaning fresh from the 55 gallon drum. Every month, the previous sample is returned to the sump, and a new sample is drawn. The new sample is visually examined for free water and sediment. Also a rough color comparison to the virgin sample is made. In addition to this easy setup, I send samples for basic analysis quarterly with a comprehensive sample annually. Benefits of the storage shelf are 1.) Gives a quick snap-shot comparison of the oil system against a standard. 2.) Will keep staff proficient in the most important task of any lube oil program- Sampling. 3.) It will sometimes plant a seed with management in investing more money in other equipment proactive maintenance. By the way, The idea is not mine. The Navy taught me this.
