Good day gentlemen! I have been taking used oil sample for oil analysis which was taken from compressor but my knowledge is limited only. Please give me importance of oil viscosity, flash point, density, acidity & water content in the lubrication of compressors or any rotating equipment. What are the disadvantages of each if it goes beyond the limits. Thank you very much..

Smartbro.
1-Viscosity: It is important to determine the viscosity, because, if you find lower viscosity values, the oil film is not good, and you are going to have more wear in your machine. Also, viscosity higher than normal values causes high temperatures. 2- Flash Point: It is important for determine if any gass or solvent is present in the oil. The presence of gasses could decrease the viscosity. 3- Water Content: Yoy have to know that as high is the water content in the oil, less life for your bearings, and rotating parts you will have. Water affects the oil film formation, oxidizes the oil, and causes rust in the machine. 4- Acidity: It's a way to determine when the oil is degraded. You must run this test, and you can add FTIR, and others, for determine the right interval of change of oil. You should add other analysis, depending the type of compressor. Maybe it could be useful for you to add, Particle Count, Ferrography, FTIR, etc. If you want more information, please, write to my email: schmid@sicelub.com. Regards, |

Dear schmid
Noted that you are experience and knowledge in the lubricant oil. i would like to ask a few questions as below:- 1) Whats the standard of testing on the engine oil sample? i heard there is ASTM, pls furnish the full standard name. 2) i been send CF-4 15W40 sample for testing, the vescocity was at 11.93 at 100C and 79.21 at 40C, ist consider normal or abnormal range?whats the normal range? 3) whast the standard range of flash point for engine oil? hope to hear from ur reply soon. thanks. Regards, Ivan |

Hi Smartbro,
There are some good basic articles on the wearcheck website. www.wearcheck.com Click on the literature tab, then on technical documents. The information you seek can be found in the following articles: How to read an oil can part 1 & part 2, also Greek for beginners part 1 & part 2 (the tests and what they tell us). |
