Hi All,

just for your information, MB has issued quite a structural change regarding their engine oil recommendations. You can read the full article with concerning engine codes on our website under heading 'news'.

Interesting indeed...
I thought MB 229.51 and 229.51 offered the same level of engine protection as 229.5 and 229.3 respectively. What could've necessitated the change?
On the other hand,MB list HD Low SAPS categories as applicable to engines without DPF ...and usually the oil-makers claim backwards-compatibility with oilder generation engines..

I noticed another significant change-for passenger car diffs (open or LS) they recommend MB 235.7 oils.Couple of years ago it used to be BP Energear MB SAE 85w-90
http://www.bp.com/liveassets/b...nergear_mbe_1006.pdf

Now the MB 235.7 oil is Fuchs Titan Syntopoid FE SAE 75w-85 (!)

...quote from a MB forum:
"The Titan EG 5010 D is sold as Titan Sintopoid FE SAE 75W-85. It was formulated for European applications, and so it was never tested in a full GL-5 program. The formulation offers the frictional properties required by MB 235.7 - additional frictional modifiers are not necessary. " -answer from a Fuchs engineer
How will it perform in a 20+ years old diff that`s been on a SAE 90 GL-5 diet ?

I wonder also why MB are shy to recommend the MB 235.6 hypoid gear oils category in passenger car open diffs .Before the introduction of 235.7,MB recommended 235.0 hypoid oils in PC and Heavy Duty applications. 235.6 seems to replace(outperform) 235.0 in HD axles.

Typical MB 235.0 oils:

Typical MB 235.6 oil:

Wouldn't 235.6 perform better than 235.0 in passenger cars?

Main reason was engine damages when used in combination with B5 or B20 Bio fuels.

More OEMS will follow with restrictions for Low/Mid Saps oils in combination with biofuels.
