Can I use conventional, multi-purpose grease with 3% Moly for Constant Velocity Joint on my car?
* mineral/ lithium based;
* 182 cSt @ 40 °C;
* NLGI 2;
* 3% Moly.
* without EP additives.

What are main requirements for CV Joint grease?

Thank you!

Konstantine,

Do not use a multi-purpose grease on CV joints. CV joint grease is very specific and has a high percentage of moly as well as being high-temperature and high-pressure. In the US, this grease can be found at any auto parts store.

CV Joint greases are something special since they need to be compatible with the rubber protection, be administered in a certain quantity for not create overpressure, need to have very low temperature characteristics especially in Moscow, and sliding additives for different speeds in an oscillatory movement. As an emergency situation you can use the grease you described. Today, new joints come already lubricated, are you rebuilding your own CVJ's? Just in case do not mix the current grease with the one you have, they might be incompatible. Clean the old grease and reapply the new grease about 180 grams per joint filling the rubber boot. Fill the joint and move several revolutions to expel the excess.

Dear Ricky:

This is just tech question.
Castrol, Addinol, Mannol, etc. manufacturers in Russia recommend such greases for cars homokinetic ball joints in their Tech Data Sheets. I do not agreed with that position.

Regards,

Konst
