I have an 84 jeep 258 6 cyl. It has 166K miles on it. It ran good until I recently chnaged the oil in it. Now I am getting lifter noise that is intermittent with oil in the air breather. Now it it is acting like the timing is off (no power and backfiring through the carb) I pulled the PVC valve and there is no smoking from the cover or the tailpipe. The carb is new and it was recently tuned. Any thoughts?

Check the cam timing, it might have jumped. Lots of possibilities with that many miles on it.

check for timing chain slack by turning the crank with a socket/ratchet and watching the distributor rotor for movement. I think 12 degrees is the limit and I believe that's total slack. You move in one direction until the dizzy starts moving ..and then go the other direction until it moves again.
