Looks like little will change for GF-5 other than piston deposit control and a few other smaller things. Wear control appears to be sufficient from GF-4 so most lube makers are saying little will change for GF-5.

Source = OEM/Lube news:
Infineum Launches Infineum P5711 For GM dexos™ 1 In mid-February Infineum launched Infineum P5711, which meets ILSAC GF-5, the new passenger car engine oil (PCEO) performance category and the challenging new dexos™ 1 specification from General Motors. Steve Haffner, crankcase regional marketing manager, Infineum, told OEM/Lube News "Infineum P5711 will meet all North America OEM service fill specifications where ILSAC GF-4 or GF-5 quality levels are the minimum level of performance. Finished oils using Infineum P5711 in proper formulations can be approved and licensed by GM upon obtaining appropriate reblenders, or rebranders, approval." According to Haffner, Infineum P5711 provides a significant level of performance above ILSAC GF-5 in order to meet the stringent requirements of the dexos™ 1 specification, which includes not only the ILSAC GF-4 tests, but also ACEA A gasoline engine tests and specific GM power train engine tests. “We are pleased to deliver Infineum P5711, our top tier full synthetic product well before the ILSAC GF-5 first allowable use date of October 1, 2010,” said Florence Thauvin, segment manager for passenger car engine oil. She added, “Infineum is a leader in top tier PCEO technology delivery in the North America region.” General Motors (GM) will stipulate the new dexos™ 1 specification globally in factory fill and service fill applications for its 2011 model year and later vehicles. Formulating to meet dexos™ 1, a unique combination of the most demanding API, ACEA and GM power train tests, represents a significant investment by Infineum in a collaborative effort with GM. The specification will ensure gasoline engine protection for worldwide GM fleets. Infineum P5711 is the first of many products that Infineum will introduce for ILSAC GF-5 in North America, Japan, China and other parts of the world. OEM/LNews had contacted several other major additive manufactures for information on their dexos 1 adpacks, but did not receive any positive responses. As far as we know Infineum P5711 is the only commercially presently available adpack that already meets both ILSAC GF-5 and dexos™ 1. |
