I have been using Mobil 1 for almost a decade with very good results. I especially like the quick flow in cold teperatures. Recently I noticed some vague information on the net that Exxon Mobil was switching Mobil 1 to Group III base stocks. Does anybody have good information on this?

Check on BITOG, the testing was on a couple of oils by Hatco VP Tom NJ. A retest is being carried out and may also be tested in UK, but disclosure should have a health warning.

I've also seen some reports on this. Looks like Mobil is going to cash in on the cheaper group 3 base stocks. Group 3 is still classed as synthetic so most consumers will never know they are NOT getting a 'true' synthetic. I think this sucks.
Not that group 3 synthetics are bad. They are very good quality but you can be sure Mobil is not going to lower their prices. Its a cash-grab in my opinion.

BITOG is now locked out to the public - registered users only.

Two "look sees" were done on a gas chromotograph by Tom Schaefer at Hatco in New Jersey on two viscosities of Mobil 1 EP. No results were posted. Tom claims he saw Group III.

This seems to have nothing at all do with any Mobil 1 besides the EP line (the Delvac 1 and motorcycle formulas, for example, could hardly be formulated with Group III base stocks) and it's really not clear whether it has all that much to do with the EP line.

One of the folks who was looking into doing further analysis and I have been in touch and he dropped the project.

When I was on the phone to Valvoline, I mentioned that there was talk of Mobil 1 going Group III, and the Valvoline Tech said it's true according to their testing.

It appears that the Extended Performance line is using Group III.

If Ashland Refining tested Mobil 1 Extended Performance, he was apparently correct.

Wikipedia has had it listed as being part groupIII for a very long time . Right a little after the start of the SS era IIRC .

Big deal if it has "some" group III . It has always had the premium add pack and engine seal compatibility . The performance speaks for it'self . I have seen single quart pricing of over 6 bucks per lately . Myself , well there are other choices to include the 2 buck per Motorcraft oils or the premium Castrol 5w-40 iffin the engine can take the 13cSt's .

Since a guy won't get kicked off this site for typing the brand oil he/she use's or especially the name of the lab he chooses...... anyone using Synergyn engine oil ? Cool

I know what you mean. They were pushing an oil in a motorcycle forum I frequent. When I showed the specs of another oil matching those of their oil, I was almost drummed out. Misinformation and opinionists flourish on the net.

I bought a bunch of Synergyn on clearance at O'Reileys. I emailed their tech line and one of the engineers directly asking if they primarily used Group 3. No reply.
