I use Delo 15w40 in my diesels, But was considering using for my 2001 chevy truck with 4.8L v-8..Also in my 2002 chevy venture van with 3.4L v-6. Do you think this would be a bad choice? Is this oil to thick? If mileage makes a difference the truck has 148k miles, and the van has 60k. Or should I just stick with Havoline 10w30. Any advice? Thanks

The temperature ranges of your area matched with what your owner's manual recommends are what I would go by. Using synthetic would also be my preference because when the weather gets warm or frosty, you'll be set.

Rudy thanks for the info, I live in florida,It stays pretty hot here. The manual says use 5w30 on both vehicles..I tried amsoil 10w30, but my van was burning 1qt for every 2000 miles. I couldnt believe it, because it never burned oil before, I switched back to petroleum and it has not burned a drop since..has anyone heard of this?

Delo 15w40 is designed for diesel engines. You need to verify whether it meets the standards of your gasoline engine. For 2001 models you would probably need at least a SJ category oil, it should be stated in the owners manual. I believe Delo 15w40 is only a SH.

Any CD and above diesel oil exceeds the best petrol standards by miles, diesel oils are designed for far more hostile environment and are way more shear resistant, makes sense in using it in gassers, take a look at UOA of HDEO like Delo 400 and Delvac in motorcycles and you will get an idea of their qualities, they excel all the expensive fancy motorcycle oils as well. I use Delo 400 in my diesel, petrol as well as gensets and my motorcycle, all bear testament to the attributes of diesel HDEO which IMHO are the best values out there on the market.

That's true but they are also less converter friendly. The heavy additive package can cause premature converter plugging. On the other hand, most new CJ-4 diesel engine oils also meet the SM gas engine API category due to their reformulation to prevent particulate filter plugging. As long as the oil meets the new CJ-4 spec. you should be OK. I personally would not go with a 15W/40 weight though. If you must use a diesel oil in your gas engines I would go with a 10W/30 weight.

One of the gas powered cars I have has around 170,000km and still on original cat, been using Delo or Delvac in it from day one of ownership.
