Hi Folks, First time reader/writer to this forum. I hope someone can answer these 3 basic questions for me.
1)Please explain the difference between an ester basestock and a PAO basestock.
2) What is the feedstock used to produc esters, and what is the feed stock used to produc PAOs?
3) Are ester basstock oils in group3 or group 4?

thanks Blueman

MGBV8, Nice web site, but it doesnt answer my questions. What is the actual feed stock used to produc esters and PAOs. I hear that esters are made from plant stock while PAO's are a produc of natural gas. Is that correct?

The starting point is probably Castor Oil
Cast r o L
Motul ester info
http://www.motul.com.au/fact_sheets/estel_oil.html

Go to Redline site for video

Go to Silkolene for Diester about 20% with PAO.

German Castrol has a PAO derived ester again about 20% which appears to be the "magic" %

Just keep posting and I will add links to sites

Esters are synthetic lubricants containing an oxygenated compound. PAOs are synthetic lubricants that contain only hydrocarbon groups.

Esters start from alcohols and acids. Either the alcohol or acids are multifunctional, so you can build the molecular weight to the right number to get the desired viscosity. Esters can be considered 'designer' lubricants because the properties of the ester can be tailored by the choice of alcohol, acid and manufacuring process to deliver specific performance results.

PAO starts from a olefin like 1-decene

Neither, esters are in group V. PAOs are in group IV.
