I have been invited to invest in a venture involving prolong oil additive. Does anyone have any comments about this product?

Do you have any information to support that it's safe to handle or use in an engine? It is NOT held in high regard over on BITOG.

Just their standard stuff. Nothing that I can actually track down to a lab for verication. What is Bitog?

Here is the link to Bob Is The Oil Guy oil additive forum - http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb...tlist&Board=5&page=1. Do a search for Prolong and you'll get a good idea as to why many are skeptical of this product.

I'd invest elsewhere.
Perhaps perpetual motion skyhooks. |

What specific issue do you have with the product?

A dose of healthy skepticism.
Unknown effects with other additives. Articles I've read about the effects of such products in general. Discussions with knowledgeable and experienced people at conferences. And lastly, If I couldn't get it to fly at work, why would I put it in my cars and bikes? |

I think that I agree with you.
We usually do a tremendous amunt of due diligence before we get involved in a project. I see that there are still about 30 additives active in the market. The funny thing is that Prolong is not sold anywhere except on the internet. hat happened to their infomercials and sales at auto parts suppliers like pep boys? |

Sorry to revive the thread.
If you look at Prolong's list of ingredients you will find HCL in there, yes, HCL. Hydrochloric acid! Hmm... Source: Prolong MSDS |

This is my first post on this site, to add to this thread I had purchased some prolong years ago and followed the directions and it lasted me 4 days before I wiped out a roller lifter and cam in a 428 cobra jet that I owned, it happened while idling in traffic.
ruined my day to say the least, was it the oil? who knows? the lifter failed then took out the cam lobe. I did not agree with the advertisment at the time and what had happened in my case. additives are better left on the shelf. just purchase quality oil Javier |

And we are suppose to feel safe about having HCL in the engine? At what "high-temperature" will the HCL form?
The additive is almost as expensive if not more than what a regular oil change would cost. $15 for quality oil, $5 for filter. Then you put another $20 in there for Prolong? That doesn't make any sense cost-wise as Prolong does not extend the drain intervals or anything. A better oil, filter, or even a bypass filtration (if your on diesel or turboed) is a much better choice than trying to make your own blend with Prolong which will result in conflicting Chemistry between the different base stock oils. |

Prolong contains chlorine additives. It does a good job at reducing friction. If you plan on keeping an engine for a while do not use Prolong. The additives will attack the various metals etc. Also it is considered a hazardous waste once mixed with the oil in the sump.
