Hello,

I have seen gear oils meeting both GL4 and GL5 specs.Actually at the back of the oil can quotes:GL4/GL5.
Does this mean they can be used in both applications?
If that is the case, what is the EP additive used? Can not be sulfur!
Any comments.

Many thanks.

When API GL4/GL5 is mentioned on the can, the oil meets both performance levels. When oil is formulated for GL5 level, the oil is expected to meet GL4 because of additive treatlevel.

Any GL5 oil can perform GL4 oil performance also. About GL5 application, except one or two applications where copper/bronze metal applications GL5 oil can also be used for GL4 applications ( This restrictions apply for S-P additive package oils only). For non S-P additive package oils there are no exceptions, Any GL5 oil can be used in GL4 applications.

Regarding Additives, widely sulfur-Phosopherous additive Packages are used. Non S-P additive packages are also available but little expensive
