We have a requirement for rust preventives built in with VCI (Vapour corrosion Inhibitor)technology for application on steel tubes and strips.

Does anybody have any experience with these additives (VCI) in rust preventives? What is the maximum protection period ? ( in terms of salt spray test).

Can anybody tell relevant websites on this.

Thanks in advance

Franky

Dear Franky,

There are many forms of VCI RPs: Liquid, Foam emitter, Stretch film, Paper, Powder, Spray, Pouch, Pipe Strip etc., the protection periods are from several months to years.

Hi Dipen
Cortec's VCI products have quite good performances and we have sold VCI377 to many customers.

We have two "experiences" with cortec products:

1. In hydraulic fluid a Cortec powder was added, and all the filters got clogged at startup.
2. In lube oil on a gas turbine a rust preventer (Cortec fluid) was added, but the oil got contaminated with water and the Cortec product created a white thick foam on top of the oil. Also this product had high amounts of Calsium witch is not to prefere in turbine oils.

..I do not know if the problems were because of the Cortec products, or because of wrong dosages.
Therefore: If you want to use it -use it with causion.
