Hi everybody:
The level of Sodium content in a medium speed Diesel engine lube oil has been increasing from 52 ppm to 175 ppm in almost 30 days. This engine burns heavy fuel oil (distillate Nº6) and is cooled with fresh water. What could it be the cause (source) for such an increment? Thanks for your comments. |

sodium is used in some oils so maybe topping off with new oil is raiseing it OR sodium can be used in coolant/additives for cooling system for corrosion control maybe a cooling jacket leak or lab/sample error.

Catracho,
Sodium climing at these levels would not be normal. First look for salt (NaCl) source. Turbo-compressor oil. Is there a cylinder oil. Are both the oil and the jacket cooled with fresh water?? Can salt spray be getting into the intake. what is the oil spec? what is the historical oil analysis Gerald, CLS USA |
