Hi All!
I want to introduce oil analysis program in my organization. To start with I want viscosity measurement done of gearbox used oil on site.

I would like to know which instrument shall I use rotary, capillary? Which is more appropriate measurement Kinematic or dynamic? If I measure dynamic viscosity, can I get sp. gravity of used oil?

Can somebody please help?

I think kinematic viscosity measurement using a capilary viscometer will help you much.

Kinematic Viscosity = Dynamic Viscosity/Density

This is the actual relation between these two.

Thank You Mr. Menon!
But my doubt is if I measure dynamic viscosity , it wont give correct kinematic vis. since sp. gravity of used oil will not remain same as when it was new giving incorrect kinematic vis.

Please clarify!

Hi,
I understand you are interested in extending your drained oil life and adopt condition monitoring systems, only visocity of oil is not critical , you must also check the same for viscosity @ 40 & 100 , TAN - TBN , Water content , Partical Count to start with.

There are professonal service providers for the same.

As for your question to start with if you want to get an aproximate idea - then there are spot analysis kits available , if your application is really critical then you got to set up a small lab at your plant for above tests. For Viscosity @ 40 & 100 most of our customers are happy using KV Bath ( as per ASTM test method )

You must budget - for atlest 4 - 4.5 lacs for the same.

Thank You for reply!
I am aware that for complete oil analysis water content, particle counter etc are very important. But I feel without much investment at the start the most imp thing to measure is viscosity. Would like to know how much viscometer shall cost.

Thank You
