I'm a newby in lubrication problems. I have a fundamental question. I want to design a gear/cambox such that the outcoming axis makes a desired oscillation movement. The gear/cambox consideres of the following parts: 1 incoming axis rotating at 1000 RPM which drives a second axis at 250 RPM by a gear pair. On this second axis a cam is attached which drives an oscillating camfollower axis. All the three axis are supported by 2 cilindrical bearings and the whole mechanism is lubricated using an oil bath. The RMS-power of the gear/cam box is approximately 60kW. The oil I use is a mineral oil with some EP-additives and a viscosity of 150 @ 40 degrees celcius.
My question is how can I determine how much litres of oil are needed in the box? What will be the temperature of the oil? What is the ideal oil-level?

Are there any rules of thumbs to determine the quantity and the temperature of oil? Are there good books/papers/websites available containing rules of thumbs concerning such problems?

The question is what is the sump capacity of the resiorvior what type of bearing are you using will all determine qty of oil
The ideal temp if its mineral oil is 50 deg c or else you need to check the viscosity of the oil you are using or use a cooler
Ideal oil level for a splash lubricant is just enough to cover the dedendum of the lowest level gear
