Hey all you guys who know way more than me,

I am the new oil analysis guy at my plant and one of the things my predecessor left me was a Ruler that never got used. I’m very interested in what it can do for me and I've read the manual and ASTM D6971-4. My problem is I can't get it to get through it’s initial Standard testing. It won’t save the standard. It keeps saying no standard has been saved yet. Have any of you seen this happen?

My other question on the Ruler is is it possible my test solutions (Yellow, Green Blue) are bad? How long are the solutions good for? We bought this back in 2003-2004.

Thanks,
Phil

My guess is you use Mobil lubricants...as most Nuke plants do since they are the only approved turbine oil for nuke plants...get ahold of your Mobil rep. and ask them for some training and use them to help you understand oil analysis and related items.

Not sure exactly what to tell you, I would go to www.Fluitec.com and use the e-mail link to contact some one for help/make sure the instrument is operating correctly.

After you run the new oil to be used for 100% standard, you get graph. Correct? Tap close then on main menu tap save as standard, graph reappears with interactive panel, pick out start/stop points for peak integration(s), tap OK/Save, window appears, type in standard name, tap enter.
Now when you tap select standard should appear. When you run samples, both sample and selected standard graphs appear together and % remaining additive values appear in boxes to right

Solvents are stable - believe they usually have 6/9 month shelf life - but after several years solvents evaporate so that different amounts in vials making analyses inaccurate. If enough solvent remaining that electrode face submerges in solvent, would be probably OK to practice on but you will need fresh solvents to get accurate results.

Not Ruler related, but are you a lab guy or a Program guy, or both?

I just run the Program at Calvert with an in company lab and then I use Herguth and Analysts for special stuff.

There are 1 or 2 other nukes around the Noria boards too.

I guess I am a lab guy - do research/develop analytical techniques/sensors for different lubricant/fuel applications, presented at EPRI workshop/NORIA a couple of times in turbine areas. With the varnish problems of turbine oils - entire session at recent ASTM meeting, recent/upcoming NORIA conferences, etc. - expect research in area to continue for awhile including nukes

When I click save as Standard a window pops up that says "No standard saved yet". It won't let me save the standard. I can reopen the data and mark the peaks but it still won't let me save it.

I got a quote from Fluitec. $1900 for new software, updating the firmware and calibration. I'll ask my manager for the money. The 500ml solution bottles are $300 each. That's not bad, I guess. So I'll just ship it off to get it fixed.

Thanks for the input guys.

Make sure they are aware of your application so they send you the correct color solution - colored solutions formulated for the antioxidant combinations used in different applications. Do you have the empty vials with the sand to dispense the solution into?

If fluitec will not help you figure out how to save your standard- don't know if I would invest another $1900 -- I would try and changing the test type run the standard then select "Save as Standard"- just to see if it will save anything--
