I know its not a good thing to mix oils, but one of my technicians did just that and now my compressor has died for now! But can anyone give me the cause for the oils reacting in such a way? He topped up with 80w90 gear oil lol!

Gear oil, as in SAE differential fluid?

What oil was specced?

Yes it was SAE geal oil, hence it burnt, but after 8 hrs of downtime all is well again lol!

I think most Atlas copco oils are PAO based in a vis range of 32-68.

I don't think it was so much the oil "reacting", it was just the wrong viscosity and couldn't flow properly to lubricate and cool the compressor.

Most AC Compressors use PAO Synthetic Oil

Atlas copco is having their own formulation & additive package.Without knowing chemical characteristics you can not mix any oil.If it was a mineral based oil then then you can mix the oil.
