We are experiencing low flash point on our centrifugal compressor seal oil system even after overhauling the compressor with new rotor and seals installed. What process of reclaming the oil to increase the flash point. The fresh oil flash point=202'C while used oil is only between 170-192'C (PMCC method). The flash point given by the mfr=224'C. Are we safe if we use this as our reference? or what would be the acceptable limits. Thank you very much.

you might be using the wrong oil other than the one that is recommended by the manufacturer. Check into that, perhaps the viscosity is too low. Did you do some flushing after the overhaul and before applying the oil?

Dear Smartbro

We could talk about several points here.

1- Flash Point lower than 180 °C could be a problem, regarding the safe issue.

2- You have to determine what is the composition of the gas, that causes the problem. You should check also the viscosity of the oil. First you will have problem with the FP, and for bigger gas amounts the viscosity could decrease, and it will not be enough for the hydrodinamic film on the bearings.

3- There is several technologies for removing gasses and increase the flash point. I recommend Thermojet Technology. You can contact to Keith Macaluso, in www.lsc.com. We used it several times, with excelents results.

Regards,

Composition of gas is mandatory being that anything above a C8 will remain in the seal oil even if a Thermojet system is utilized.

If seal oil system is fitted for separate return rather than returning to main lube oil console, vacuumn distillation could possibly render in spec product to be diverted back to main lube oil console. Finished product should be analyzed for FP to ensure this system will meet your needed utilization criteria.

Multiples of manufacturers will freely demonstrate their manufactured product for cleaning your seal oil lubricant.

Randy

You are right, the composition of gas is mandatory for determine what kind of remotion technology must be used.

Also, you are right with the possibility of a free demonstration of the technology.
