What implications we may have on performance and component lifing, etc, if we choose 'Gear Oil' of viscosity 220, in place of 'Compressor Oil' of viscosity 220?

The area of concern is the additive package of the Extreme Pressure gear lubricant reacting with the journal bearing metal that would usually be lead compositions.
If the gearlube was applied accidentally then removed withing hours and maybe a couple days most likely no long lasting difficulty ,
If the gearlube was intended to replace the compressor oil long term then no, too much risk because degradation of the lead bearings.
If for some reason the gear lubricant is the lubricant of choice then the chemical reactions between metals and additive package must be considered.

I apologize for not providong more information earlier. This compressor oil is used for Cylinder lubrication of the recip compressor. It is a 'loss' lubrication. We are looking for equivalent product as the compressor oil will not be supplied anymore and no other vendor has equivalent 'compressor' oil so we are looking for alternative of using 'gear' oil of similar viscosity grade and other properties. ... the Compressors work at very high temperatures and gear oil at that constant high temperature can cause varnish, gum and carbon deposits. Carbon deposits at the discharge area can cause severe damages even explosions due to the heat and the carbon particle.
hardened Carbon deposits can cause excess wear and tear, leading to premature Failures.
Sulphur content in Gear oil can mix with the condensate and cause acidic reaction leading to corrosion.
what was the oil recommended by the OE manufacturer?

Ask, I have sent an inquiry to our Caltex division in the UAE regarding your need for a 220 compressor oil (as per your desc)Our Texaco product is Regal R&O 220 which is readily available in the U.S.
Hopefully they will have a product in Dubai that will solve your problem. I will advise you soonest.
Please do no use a gear oil in your application. Totally inappropriate.
