Thickness (consistency) of greases are classified by NLGI and the same is measured by the easeness of penetration (Cone penetration).

If the penetration is high, the NLGI number will be low and vice versa.

Grade 60 Stroke Worked Penetration at 25oC Consistency
NLGI No.000 445 - 475 Semi Fluid
NLGI No.00 400 - 430 Semi Fluid
NLGI No.0 355 - 385 Very Soft
NLGI No.1 310 - 340 Soft
NLGI No.2 265 - 295 Common Grease
NLGI No.3 220 - 250 Semi Hard
NLGI No.4 175 - 205 Hard
NLGI No.5 130 - 160 Very Hard
NLGI No.6 85 - 115 Solid

Certain greases are formulated for Extreme pressure applications and they consist Extreme Pressure (EP) Additives.

The number 1 and 2 represents the thickness of grease and EP indicates that the grease can be used for Extreme Pressure Applications.
