Can one use waste oils to lubricate open roller chains? The chain operates in dusty environment.
Is there certain oils that in their waste form would be good to use and others not? The types of waste oils we have are Belray 640, A.T.F., Nuto 32, 320 gear, 220 gear, and Terrestic 68.The waste oil are being collected through scheduled oil changes and are somewhere in the range of ISO 22/17 cleanliness.

This is to inform you that used oil contain carbon deposites which helps in damaging your chain much faster than without lubricant. Also additives like EP, AW & Corrosion resistant in used oil existed so they cann't perform upto mark.

the loading and speed of your chains have a significant bearing upon the lubrication,
we are always reluctant to use EP gear oils on chains as the sliding faces of a chain drive tends to activate the EP increasing erosion corosion type wear on the chain,
if the speed was moderate to high the 68 ISO in yuor waste may be suitable but not if they are heavily loaded slow moving chain drives,
Best will always be passive EP solids, not moly, with the base oil to suit the speed and loading, enclosed would be very nice,
with exposed, the replentishment rate is required to be enough to keep the chain lubricated and clean enough to survive until the next planned replacement,
