Oil Mist Lubrication was great 50 years ago. Today you have environmental and health issues that have to be taken into consideration and there are better products available. Generally mist systems have the advantage of providing a constant supply of lubricant to the bearing surface and in high speed applications this is a good thing. ThIs type of dispensing, especially in high speed, prevents loading up the rolling elements and causing viscous drag, which causes heat, expansion and wear.

The lubricant used in these types of systems have to be a light base viscosity because they are generally heated to cause then to atomize in the air stream. That is the systems downfall because by introducing more heat into a highly loaded, fast moving bearing is one of the last things you want to do.

Dropsa makes a product called SMA, or Air/Oil, which uses air to move the lubricant down the lines. This wets the lubricant out onto the inside of the tube and causes a very fine spray to be created at the bearing point, sort of like the mist system, but with out the heat, atomization issues and the ability to run much heavier lubricants. We have used these systems with EP220 gear lube with great success. In some applications we have replaced mist and had the bearing temps drop by more than 50F.

It also is used to lubricate very fast moving chains, and specialty applications like bandsaw guide lube.

If you need more info, please go to Dropsa.com to find a distibutor in your area, or contact myself and i can direct you
