My first real job was for a municipal utility.

Short answer, filter and chlorine.

We used massive sand filters. Those got backwashed as needed.

Chlorine was injected and then you need residence time to allow it to work.

We used large, baffled, tanks.

I no longer recall the specs. But you want a residula chlorine content as it hits your taps.

A real reason for the filter is so the chlorine doesn't have to work so hard. Saves money by using less. A side beneift is better appearance.

It will be difficult to belive that water is clean if it looks bad.

In reply to the sand filter user I wanted to point out the use fo glass media, in our case recycled and sterilized and available at nominal cost. Information on advantages of using glass versus sand(aside from environmental considerations) are detailed at length at www.glasspackfilter.com. The entire filter platform is used vs the top few inches of a sand filter. This is ideal for major contaminated water, particularly with oil and lubricants. Residentially it can be used in numerous applications.
