I am having a gearbox in a ship propulsion which had seawater in the (empty) tank. The tank has been cleaned, but now the filters are blocking after one hour. We checked the system, cooler, safety valeve pump etc, but didn't find technical failers. Could salt cristals be the cause? Filter elements are 35 en 120 um (metal carthridge, finn filters). Has anyone had experience with salt water in a gearbox system and what were the symptoms? The oil is a mineral oil, viscosity 85 cSt. Regards Harry

Is there any slime on the blocked filters. Could be a bacteria left in the tanks from the water is growing in there. If so a biocide could help.

CC Jensen has a filter separator designed for marine thrusters and gearbox applications with seawater contamination. Seawater should not be removed with vacuum dehydration or similar methods to avoid leaving the salt in the oil. The CJC filters are not affected by the saltwater and the water is separated, collected, and discharged automatically. The pre-heaters supplied keep the oil at an optimal temperature for water separation. More info is availible at http//www.klassenhydraulics.com. Harv |

Has anyone got any facts on what might happen to oil or components when salt crystals are present in dry oil? Other than filter blockage. I guess it might increase the chance of rust/corrotion. Any thoughts? |
