The 4-ball wear test was devloped by GM mainly for the sake of backwards compatibility of old engines which are still on the market, but not on-the-shelf for testing anymore. Besides, it's much cheaper than a true dyno test. It simulates pushrod / cam wear. A nice test, but easy to fool with "snakeoil".
