BASE OIL INTERCHANGE GUIDELINES

Pls let me know whether we should conduct the required tests whenever, we change the base oil sources/manufacture,irrespective of the type of base stock as Gr1,Gr2 etc.... to meet various API stds like SL,SM,SN for gasoline categories an CH4,CI4,CI4Plus etc..for Diesel categories.I am asking about the interchangibility of the base stock.Example,if I am using Exxon Mobil base stock(Gr2) and want to replace it with another Gr2 base stock like GS Caltex.Is it really required to do these engine tests.
