Certain additives such as anti wear or EP additives will react with the reagents used for TAN measurements therefore there will an initial reading for TAN measurements. I have seen readings for diesel engine oils around the 2 to 3 mark. It is best to get the new oil analysed then use this as part of the bench mark to trend the used oil.
