Read our primer articles on High Mileage Oil, Synthetic Oil and Kinematic Viscosity

I started using Mobil 1 in our Astro Van about two years ago and the oil was about $5/qt at Walmart and the filter was about $12 at AutoZone (Walmart does not carry Mobil 1 filters).

Then I found out that by paying my $10 (or was it $20) I could be a preferred customer with Amsoil. We all pay a membership fee to shop at Sam's Club or Costco, so why not? Amsoil's oil was only about 25 cents more than Mobil 1 and the filter was cheaper than the Mobil 1.

Since the Amsoil oil is guaranteed to go 25K miles and the filter is good for 6 months, it works out much cheaper than Mobil 1. If I put a bypass filter on the engine I apparently could run the oil for two or three hundred thousand miles (with periodic testing). That's even further than Synlube and costs 1/6th as much.

Am I wrong? Are the claims of 409,000 miles on an oil change with Amsoil just marketing hype? If so, where have those claims been debunked?

Filter cleans oil to 1 micron plus top ups
M1 version of wear
ExxonMobil has conducted two long-term tests with Mobil 1 – one for 200,000 miles with engines on a test bed, and another for over 1 million miles using a popular European sedan. The 200,000-mile test used two identical domestic four-cylinder engines, one using Mobil 1 and the other a premium conventional oil. At the end of the test, the engines were torn down and examined. The engine run with conventional oil had higher wear rates and significant deposits, while the Mobil 1 engine was virtually clean. What's more, consumption of the conventional oil was eight times higher than with Mobil 1. The 1-million-mile test involved a car on an outdoor dynamometer running through a start-stop, low-speed/high-speed protocol more or less 24 hours a day. Oil drain intervals were 7,500 miles, the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer. At the end of the test, with 1,001,120 miles on the vehicle, the engine was removed and disassembled. Overall engine wear was extremely light. In fact, with the exception of light-to-moderate wear on the camshaft and followers, no other significant engine wear was noted. And oil consumption over the entire test was just .040 quarts per 1,000 miles. So, how long will an engine last until it fails on Mobil 1? It's safe to say that no one knows!

So IMO it is likely that these claims for Synthetic oils are true, but could be applied to any top Synthetic oil with correct filter.

The question is why does wear occur?

90% on start up or 60% from wear particles.

It must be in oil companies interests to understate OCI and avoid warranty claims
Personally:

AMSOIL products are high quality, but.

A. They let some real idiots become dealers...and the idiots spread horrid falsehoods. (I've heard them claims that M1 was actually dino oil because PAO was really group I.)

B. Amsoil's filter is good...so is the M1 filter...but if that oil is in your engine less than 12,000 miles or so I would be very suprised if your wear number would justify the price over a motorcraft, wix, pure one, etc.

C. Locally to me, walmart mobil 1 is ~$4/quart, inculding tax in the 5 quart jug. No shipping...no waiting...

D. Maybe not for you...but for many in the continental U.S., $4 a quart M1 in any mid-sized town is worth quite a bit.
