I know that the ASTM methods are $50, but I'm not an oil pro and can't afford to purchase a series of these methods to learn what I need. I was hoping that someone could tell me the info, from experience, without violating any copyright laws.

I only joined this forum so I could learn from the pros since I'm only a consumer of oil products. Thanks for replying.

Paulv,

ASTM E2412 does not provide the upper limits for which you are seeking. It provides the FTIR measurement wavenumbers, baseline wavenumbers and reporting units. It gives some example with respect to spectra interpretation.

My suggestion would be to speak to your current used oil analysis laboratory with respect to the limits and the information you are seeking. The limits are dependent on the methods the lab is using and the manufacturer of the FTIR.

Remember that these limits are a trending tool and must be interpreted in conjunction with other tests such as KV, TBN, TAN, RPVOT, wear rates etc..
