I am interested in finding information regarding the treatment of hydraulic oil containing bacteria - as a result of water penetration.

The anaerobic bacteria is generaly problematic as they proliferate in "oxygen starved environments." Bacteria thrive on "emulsifiers" which acts as fodder. This can normally be controlled by boosting and maintaining pH between 8.5 to 9.0
Neat oils do not normally have a emulsifier additive package except in some Slideway or special oils. If the oil is contaminated with water you can detect bacteria with "dip sticks/slides which show bacteria count" used by many soluble oil users.
For tank side additive "Groton" is a well known brand and is used widely for souluble oils.
You can also contact Albemarle Oilfield Chemicals. Thier Wellguard 7030 Biocide is said to treat both aerobic and anerobic bacteria.

Be sure to take away the main problem first: Water...then you can treat the oil with Biocide.
As the other replies stated water ingress must be prevented before the difficulty can be removed and prevented , we run a microimage oil lab, wear debris etc, rttech.com.au
The OHS area that concerns us with water in oil samples is infection from the contaminated oil samples if allowed to gain contact with open cuts or skin. Because our samples are from all types of plants the bacteria contamination can cause very agressive infections to technicians when handling samples,
Carefully check the sample by smell and if it smells like a dead horse watch out and if in a food factory let production know immediately to prevent any possible manufactured product contamination.
