Hi Guys,

At work yesterday we installed new bearings and pillow blocks on a small centrifugal fan ~150kW.

The bearing are FAG spherical roller (sorry forgot the exact bearing ISO No.) and FAG housings. The bearing have holes and a grove around the circumference on the outer race for lubrication. They also fit onto an taper adaptor sleeve.

I directed the fitters to install the nipples to the side opposite the taper sleeve nut. I made this call off an SKF bearing installation book I read - refer to the attached pics. Also they state on their web site "For arrangements where the bearing is mounted on an adapter sleeve, relubrication should be made at the side opposite the sleeve nut". Also please note that the bearing shown in the pic is a spherical roller with a centre groove and holes for lubrication - same as my problem. Also note that the SKF bearing block has a hole in the centre for a lubrication nipple if it was preferred.

However, my boss and work mate preferred the centre location and the FAG insulation book doesn't reference anything about positioning the nipple to the side opposite the locking nut. In fact I believe they mention if spherical roller bearing then lubricate from the centre.

My question is what is the preferred location to installed the grease nipple for this particular scenario or is it a case of six of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other?

Cheers
