OR
is there a direct relation between the additives and their API grades??

There has been considerable changes to the types of additives used in formulating engine oils particularly since emission control and the different types of exhaust after-treatment technologies available. Many engine oils not only have API specifications but also need to meet ACEA and OEM specifications. It would be difficult to guess the amount of additive used just based on the API specs alone.
