Does anyone use lubrication for the outfeed chains in a planer mill that does not mark up the finish product.

viscosity is test with a special capillary tube in control temperature bath mostly are 20,40,60,100 celcius.the viscosity is measure by the time of fluid flow from marked distance and depand on the constant of the capillary tube.commonly viscosity will drop as the temperature go up.

I put a system on the outfeed planer trays for weyerhaeuser in Aberdeen WA about 2-1/2 years ago. As this was finished lumber, we made sure that the lumber wasn't going to be marked. I think they used hydraulic oil and we set up the system to put a small amount on every 15 minutes.
They used to change the chains every 6 months and now 2-1/2 years later they haven't even adjusted them for slack. I came up with a very cheap felt applicator that runs on the inside of the chain, on the return, so it is oiling the inside only. As long as oil gets to the pins and bushings of the chain, you don't need any on the outside. If you want more info or contacts at the mill to inquire, email me:
