I have installed filtration into lube oil blending facilities previously and the key is what level of cleanliness you begin with dictates the amount of filtration required to acheive your goal. For example if you drop 2 to 3 NAS codes with standard filtration that is usually achievable. However in your case if you only achieved NAS 9 after filtering then your original oil spec must have been very dirty. My advice consult a reputable filtration company, we called all the major ones in and asked them to provide the technical advice we required to get where we needed to go. It weeded out the good from the bad as some just said put our filter on and it will work without any analysis to back it up. In the end we went with Pall and were very pleased even though it wasnt the cheapest quotation.
As Robert C mentioned there is a big difference in trying to filter with a single pass (as is required in most oil blending plants) compared to recirculation. If you can do recirculation then just keep filtering until you reach your desired cleanliness level.
