Grease Compatibility

We're installing a new piece of equipment that has SKF 222 series bearings in a SAF 228 housing and was packed with Mobil XHP 222 grease. We do not stock this grease (Lithium complex) and would like to substitute Texaco EP-2 grease for the PM. Has anyone encountered any difficulties in adding/mixing XHP 222 with EP-2?

A quick internet search shows a couple Texaco EP greases. Assuming you are talking about Molytex EP2, you should have no problem adding it to a lithium complex lubricated bearing.

I just had 2 lithium greases fail full compatibility testing.

Everything looked great on paper, until we mixed them and they softened.

Interesting case.

the 2 greases were lithium complex?

Simple lithium soap?

Same NLGI grade, etc. etc.?

What do you think that happen?

Premium RB and Shell Alvania RL

All mixtures showed softening and the 50:50 mix failed completely.

No idea on cause, I guess this is why we don't assume compatibility.

Last week I attended the Noria lubrication conference and this topic was in one of the sessions.

Lubrication can look good on paper with the thickener and oil viscosity but the additive package may not work together.

Something to check. Must compare additive packages and try the mix test.
