HEMI and viscosity

Hi guys,

Anyone heard of the problems with HEMI engines running on 5W-30 oils? I know the original viscosity should be 0W-20/5W-20, but for sure a lot of workshops will use a 5W-30 as it is more a regular (bulk) product.

Any info would be appreciated.

My gut feeling is that most of the XW-20 recommendations in the US market including this vehicle are made to meet the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standard.

A coworker got a warning light in his 300 for using the wrong visc.

Seems the cylinder dectivation uses the oil as working fluid and it matters for that.

HEMI engines which are fitted with a Multi Displacement System (MDS) should use SAE 5W-20 according to the OEM. The OEM states that not using the recommended viscosity can cause the MDS to function improperly.

Note however that on various HEMI owner forums you can find that owners of vehicles which are fitted with the HEMI including the MDS are succesfully using SAE 5W-30 in warmer climates such as Florida or Arizona.
