High Cu content in circulating oil

Dear All,
Our central lubrication using Shell Morlina 220 since 3 years ago, and the last a half year we found if Cu content around 100ppm. TAN value still below 1 and kinematic viscosity increase around 230cSt.
- What high Cu content effects?
- Source of Cu?
- The best way to reduce Cu content in oil?

Dear Asafandi,

mostly Cu content for forced lubrication system may come from thrust bearing, or oil cooler leaching.

The effect of high Cu, will accelerate oil oxidation.

How to establishing the warning limit for Cu content, you can addopt ASTM D 6224.
(3 x STDEV) + Average Cu Content.

Thanks for your reply and explanation.

We plan to re-fresh the oil with take out 30% oil in tank and re-fill with new one to reduce rate of Cu content. Is it effective?

Cu is common to become high, if there is a sacrificed metal component (which mainly composed by Cu) in your gearbox system.

For additional of 30%v of fresh oil, it will correcting the oil properties.
But i do believe that your problem is not the oil properties

Have you try Pentane - Toluene Insoluble test(ASTM D 893)?
Insoluble > 0.5%wt is an indication of task to change your gear oil.
