hydraulic lifters

I had the hydraulic tappets replaced on my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder at a well known and professional repair shop. The motor is a 3.0 liter V6 with 175,000 miles. The day after picking it up from the shop it lost oil pressure and threw a rod while driving down the freeway. It was full of new oil. The shop says it can't be related to the work they did since the work took place at the top of the engine. Is this a coincident or them not wanting to take responsibility?

It sounds to me like they're correct.

Maybe you had oil pump failure, and it took out the weakest link....the rod?

Its a bit premature of them to dismiss the possibility without disassembly to check and see if their work is at fault. They should know full well that the hydraulic tappets are plumed into the main oil gallery in the head. Any failure will allow most if not all the oil pressure to be lost there. Have their work checked out elsewhere if you need to. If their work is found to be NOT at fault be a stand up guy about it. If there is a problem with the parts or their work putting them in and they wont stand behind it,then be merciless in your dealings with them from that point on!

Until the engine is apart it is hard to say. Maybe noisy lifters were only a symptom, not the cause?
