RE: hydraulic oil for Gradall 534D. My Gradall manual recommends Mobil 424 or Citgo Tractor hydraulic oil both of which are not available on this island. (Maui) A mechanic friend suggests Shell Tellus 46. Someone else says any general purpose hydraulic oil is OK....Is there an equivalency chart out there somewhere? Thanks.

Here's a lubricants interchange guide. http://www.plantengineering.co...ple2004lubechart.PDF

I would NOT use a regular hydraulic oil to replace the two that were recommended by the manufacturer. The ones recommended are universal tractor/torque fluid (UTF) oils designed to be used not only as a hydraulic oil but also as a transmission lubricant, wet brake/clutch lubricant and gear oil. A standard AW hydraulic oil will not have the correct additive package for all of these applications. What your looking for is the type oil used in common sump systems on farm equipment. If you have any tractor dealers or farm suppliers near by they should stock a UTF oil.

If you are looking for a higher quality oil my recommendations would be either Universal Torque Fluid or UTF Red. The UTF Red has a slightly higher viscosity and is a tacky/cohesive oil that works great in hotter climates.
The zinc AW additive in a conventional hydraulic will not be your friend in this application.

In addition to the ugly deposits that may form, using an oil with the wrong traction coefficient may impact operation & service life.

While you may not have a distributor on the island for either product in question, you may be able to find a jobber who carries one or can get it for you.
