Rob,

Ironically enough I actually work for Mr. Wurzbach and its good to see that the word about the work our lab has done is getting around. That being said I was wondering if you could send us some specific information on the grease that you are trying to sample and where you are trying to sample it from to my email at estraub@mrgcorp.com. Hopefully we will be able to assist you with you grease sampling and analysis.

Bob,

Recently in our lab we received several samples where one bottle was sent to us and the other bottle went to another lab and then came here. We preformed the RULER test on both sample bottles containing the the same sample and had a large amount of difficulties getting the samples that were in two different bottles but the same sample to match up. When we called Fluitec about this they told us that our RULER might need calibration. Because of these events we were wondering if there was a calibration oil that we could run on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to ensure that the RULER doesn't need to be calibrated. Also so if it was slipping we could have a planned time to send it in since we only have one RULER in our lab.

What were you seeing?

Were the peaks shifting to the right/left, different sizes, different ratios, etc.?
If you analyzed the same sample/same bottle, two or three times in a row were the results reproducible?
Unless something was added to the sample sent to the other lab or samples were not hetergenous (water/contaminant settling with time removing antioxidants, etc.) can't see any reason extra travel time would affect results. Does shaking oil sample before testing affect results?

Since RULER uses such little sample -assume you're using 200/400 uL - a pint of stored fresh oil or grease would be enough to allow a check at the beginning of each day for a year and still have fresh oil/grease left over
Bob,

Sorry it took so long for me to reply. We were using the same sample amount - 200 ul for each sample. The peaks were low and to the right. We found out that the issue mainly had to do with the unit being out of calibration/disconnected. It seems that due to over vigorous cleaning the connections from the clip to the "dipstick" had come loose. This has since been corrected and under your advice we were able to get our hands on RULER reference oil which we use to check the calibration twice a month. Thanks for all of your help and information.
