Large lube oil tanks

I have a large number of larhe lube oil tanks with product in each one. What is the best way to sample the bottom area of the tanks to tell height of debris and contamination in the tanks. Tanks have top ports for access. Tanks are 15 to 33 feet in height.

Hello,

I recomend you look at an ASTM Standard: ASTM D4057 - 06 Standard Practice for Manual Sampling of Petroleum and Petroleum Products

This standard describes a device called a thief.

This device is lowered on a string until you reach the proper level, where you pull a second lanyard to admit the fluid into the thief.

When you pull this device back up you have a known volume from an exact level in the tank.
