Why would I test lubricating oils for steam emulsion, carbon residue, precipitation number, and oxidation?

Hi there,
From what you state I feel your application is one of a Cylinder oil, or Steam cylinder oil and hence could be for a Power Plant or Locomotive.
Most cylinder oils are straight minerial oils and it would be a good check to know the Conradson Carbon Residue (CCR) value, Oxidation value. If the application calls for contact with steam, knowledge of the steam and or its demulsification number would be an asset.
The precipitation number is Greek to me.

On second thoughts, the "Precipitation number" referred by you, is probably Pour Point. Pour Point is the temperature, at which the oil ceases to flow and becomes a thick fuld or semi solid.
