Read our primer articles on High Mileage Oil, Synthetic Oil and Kinematic Viscosity

Within the past two weeks, we've been able to see the new SN oils from Mobil and Amsoil. Very different additive packages.

Mobil 1

Moly 77
Boron 92
Calcium 1015
Mg 746
P 675
zinc 812
Tbn 9.3

Amsoil SS

Moly 130
Boron 232
Calcium 3251
Mg 12
P 652
Zinc 763
Tbn 12.6

Mobil 1 is using Mg, which I thought was going away for good in PCM's. Amsoil now looks like Mobil 1 from 2005.

Wow, that is a leap in logic! You compare 6 elements and TBN value, and know nothing of the other elements, chemical additives, base oils and performance.

The total package performance can better be compared with standard ASTM tests, recommended oil change intervals, and warranty coverage, in which AMSOIL always trumps Mobil 1, for the past 36 years.

The additive packages are different because AMSOIL Signature Series is a 25,000 mile/1 year oil and Mobil 1 EP is a 15,000 mile/1 year oil, and Mobil 1 is a 10,000 mile/1 year oil.

Hi Motorbike, good hearing from you. I thought the TAN was high too. Thanks for the tid bit on Maxima. Interesting. I agree with what you said about the detergent/dispersant.

With lower sulfer levels in fuel, blowby will be less acidic so lower TBN is ok. TBN retention is more important though so it should be interesting to see how it holds up. The sulfated ash is lower with he Mobil formulation.
