It seems members are hesitant to comment on the Motor Oil Bible. I should note that the only reason I asked is that most of the information it provides is new to me and while I have no reason to dispute any of it, I just thought I might ask for opinions. In any case, since my post I have found similar technical information/explanations from other sources that conform to the Motor Oil Bible.
So, I guess I just take the author's rankings of the various motor oils listed for what they are, i.e. an opinion from a more qualified/knowledgeable person than I and which are based on the criteria the author describes.
I have visited the website for the Motor Oil Bible and frankly am not impressed. However, there is a book that I am highly desirous of, but not currently willing to pay the $215 for (if it ever goes on sale, I may jump on it):
Engine Oils and Automotive Lubrication Wilfried J. Bartz
The motor oil bible was written by a disgruntled Amsoil seller that couldn't make enough on the oil so he wrote a book its outlandish and decieving like most of amsoil's propoganda.
I've read Amsoil's stuff. What in particular is decieving? Also, I liked the oil bible, it's written is easy to understand english. not a lot of technicial mumbo-jumbo.
I know this is an old thread, but just in case someone happens to run across it, I happen to be the author of The Motor Oil Bible, and I'm not sure where some of these statements come from.
It really matters little to me whether someone cares for my book or not. Either they do or they don't. No big deal.
However, it does bother me when people post information that is patently false and misleading with absolutely no basis for their comments.
"additive guy" has no information on which to base his statements whatsoever.
First, I make no outlandish statements in my book that are not backed by 30 years of research by numerous lube and automotive companies and organizations.
The information found in my book can be found in NUMEROUS lubrication books, trade journals, magazines, etc. if one searches for articles that pertain to the topics I discuss in my book. I've just tried to condense the information into one book that is easier to read for the average Joe than those that are written only for tribologists.
As to the slanderous comment regarding my failed AMSOIL business, I happen to be a current AMSOIL dealer, have been for 12 years and am probably one of the top 50 dealers in the company.
Of course, now that statement will be used to say that my book is just one big sales piece, and that's ok too. It's tough to break through the skepticism, but, those that do will find a wealth of information in the book.
This debate has interested me. Over my career have been involved in some aspects of formulating and marketing of engine oils. I have currently moved on to oil condition monitoring. I have not read 'motor oil bible' but have scanned excerpts on the internet. I will not comment on the excerpts from the book but wish to add some points of interest???
Extended oil drains always possible with high spec oils ,but requires OCM and depends on operating conditions. Marketing claims must be validated through OCM field trials. The unique wonder engine oil does not exist. All blenders have the SAME materials at their disposal and have to obtain approvals from OEMs and pass API spec requirements. Large resources are needed to develope engine oils and only the major additive suppliers(4) and multinationals with research facilities have these, to enable them go beyond the practice of buying an additive pack with approved base fluid and VI improver to meet percieved performance requirement(s). With increasing demands on engine oil, fuel economy and the environment 'synthetics' are required. Synthetics in engine oil can be Esters and PAO and some hydrotreated products(high VI(140) and good oxidation stability).Esters and PAO available to all. Engine oils can be sexy with enthousiasts claiming they have found the wonder oil, a lot of this is down to clever marketing and claims not always substantiated, or substantiated with irrelevant tests.
