Multi grade and single grade lube oil

If the equipment is Diesel engine and operate 24 Hr at offshore in hot weather condition ( 27 oC up) , I just wonder that do we need to use multigrade lube oil? As I understand multigrade is better than single grade in term of start up period , but if we operated 24 hrs /365 days a year until maintenance due .
Do we need to use multigrade because of price of multigrade is higher than single grade ?
If vendor of equipment suggest to use sae 40, Can we use like 15w-40 ? or it is better to use sae 40 only.
